Installing the Printer Software

Pre-requisites:

  • Ensure that you download software for your Printer and Computer.
  • Select the software that is intended for both your computer operating system and your printer model.
  • The computer you are installing the printer software on must be connected to the same network you are connecting the printer to.

Steps:

  • Follow the on-screen instructions until you are prompted for Connection Type.
    • Select either "Through the Network", "Network"or "Wireless" when prompted.
    • The wording will depend on the version of software you are installing.
    • In some cases the software may automatically find your wireless settings for you.
    • Follow the on-screen directions to finish installing the software for your printer

Note: If you have already connected the printer to your network and are now installing the software, the printer should be discovered automatically during the installation process.

Auto Wireless Connect

This allows you to connect your printer to your wireless network automatically without having to connect any cables or enter your wireless network settings such as your network name or password. Many newer HP printers will have this capability during the standard software installation process.

Using this Option

  1. Install the software for your printer and follow the onscreen instructions.
  2. When prompted, select the "Network (Ethernet/Wireless)" connection type and then choose "Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer (recommended)"

Compatibility Requisites with HP Auto Wireless Connect

  1. Your computer uses Windows Vista (and newer) and Mac OS X 10.5 (and newer).
  2. Your computer uses a wireless connection to your network and the operating system is in control of the wireless adapter so that the HP Software can retrieve the computer's current network settings.
  3. Your computer is connected to your network over 2.4GHz.

Note:HP Printers are not compatible with 5.0 GHz networks. You may still be able to connect the printer to your network using other setup methods as long as your router also supports 2.4GHz.

  4. Your computer does not use a static IP address.
  5. Your printer is in HP Auto Wireless Connect mode. The printer will be in this mode for two hours after it is first powered on during installation before it is connected to a network.

Note:: If your printer has been powered on for more than two hour and the software has not yet tried to connect the printer to your wireless network, you can reset this mode by using the "Restore Network Settings" or "Restore Network Defaults" option from the printer control panel. Usually found under the Network menu or by touching the wireless icon (or button) and then going to "Settings" or gear icon. Refer to your printer documentation for more information on this.

USB Setup of the Wireless Method

If this is a first time installation for a printer without a display and you are using the USB setup of the wireless method, the software will not find the printer on the network and you will be guided through creating a wireless connection for the printer.

During this process, you will temporarily connect a USB cable between the printer and your computer. Do not connect the USB cable until the software instructs you. The computer you are installing the printer software on must be connected to the same network you are connecting the printer to.

WiFi Protected Setup (WPS Pushbutton Method)

Pre-requisites

  • Both your printer and wireless router must support WPS pushbutton mode. Consult your printer and wireless router manuals.
  • The wireless router must have a physical WPS pushbutton available.
  • Your network must use WPA or WPA2 security. Most WPS wireless routers will not connect using the WPS method if WEP or no security is used.
  • Most WPS wireless routers will not connect using the WPS method if you are using the manufacturer’s default for the network name and no security.

Compatibility Requisites with HP Auto Wireless Connect

  1. Start the WPS pushbutton mode on your printer.
For instructions on starting WPS on your printer, consult your printer's manual.
  2. Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router

Wireless Setup Wizard

This wizard runs from the Printer’s control panel and is available only for printers with a touch display.

  1. Ensure your network name and your security password (WEP, WPA or WPA2).
  2. On the printer's control panel, go to the Network menu or touch the wireless icon and then go to settings. Select Wireless Setup Wizard. The Wireless Setup Wizard displays a list of wireless networks in the area.

Note: Settings may be accessed by touching a wrench icon, depending on the product model.

  3. Select your wireless network's name from the list.
  4. If you don't see your wireless network listed, you can enter your network name manually by scrolling to the bottom of the list. If you enter the name manually it must be exact, including upper and lower case characters.
  5. Enter your WEP key or WPA passphraseexactly, including upper and lower case characters. Your printer should connect to your wireless network. If it does not connect, you are given the opportunity to print a Wireless Network Test report that will help you find out what may be wrong.
